They say Makossa is dead. Even if that was true, do you know what you must be doing?
25 years ago, when Henri DIKONGUE released “Ndol’Asu” ABZ had just started primary one.
This song was a masterpiece played and enjoyed in every household in Bamenda & Douala at the time. The old and the young, fathers, and mothers throughout the country were literally possessed by its enthralling melody.
Few years on, and one of the reasons ABZ-trumental became an Artiste and music producer was so, he could magnify this original sound pertaining to our identity, and supercharge the indescribable musical feeling that Makossa gave its audience nationally and internationally – a genre many considered “beyond the ordinary”.
“This has been the route since our song ‘Original Makossa’. As a new generation, if Makossa was truly dead, it’d be our responsibility to resurrect it through refinement – adding novelty to that spiritually alpha sound.” – ABZ says.
ABZ ft Henri Dikongue – “Identity” is a resurrection of the 1997 mega tune ‘Ndol’Asu’ that got the whole continent vibing to, and a representation of the transfer of the musical mantle to the first of the new breed of Makossa (New Makossa).
It represents the deliberateness of the Artiste, ABZ to live and transfer to the next generation of Artistes an original, fierce, and naturally domineering genre that showcases their unique identity to the globe at large.
Kotto Bass, Lapiro, John Minang, Manu Dibango, West Madiko, and more, left for us a supreme musical identity which we must refine to have a grip of the continental musical space and beyond AGAIN!
